PRESS RELEASE – 22nd July 2016
The Department of Education cancelled a decision made by the former education minister to introduce nurture units in two Irish-medium primary schools. Scoil An Droichid and Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagáin were previously informed they had funding to run a ‘nurture group’ in 2016/2017. Nurture groups provide invaluable help for children with special educational needs and have been proven as “highly successful”. The schools were told about the removal of funding just one week before the end of term after significant preparations had been made. The two schools would have been the first Irish-medium schools funded to run them. No other primary schools were affected.
On 30th June 2016 acting on behalf of a Father of two Children affected by this decision, O’Muirigh Solicitors sought an urgent Judicial Review of the decision to remove funding from the Nurture Group at Scoil An Droichid. Our client is delighted to note today’s confirmation by the Department that as a result funding has now been secured, and, that Scoil An Droichead will have a Nurture Group in place, as planned, for September. Our client and his Children are understandably relieved and welcome this u-turn by the Department for Education.
This decision marks a significant victory for the many Irish Speaking children with special educational needs who will now have the benefit of Nurture Group provision on a par with their English language speaking peers. Our client hopes that this marks an end to the arguably unlawful removal of funding from Irish Medium schools and looks forward to the fair, proper and lawful distribution of funding to benefit all children regardless of language or community.
