Statement Re: Irish News Informer Allegations
We represent an individual who believes that the allegations relating to a ‘suspected informer and ex-member of the IRA’s internal security unit’ contained in the Irish News Article of Wednesday 26th April 2023 have been directed at him.
Our client strenuously denies the allegations made against him. These allegations are entirely without foundation and defamatory of him. Further, our client has instructed that he has not ‘disappeared with his wife from a property in West Belfast last week’. His home has not been ‘cleared out’. The article in question was published without any attempt to verify any of this information with our client.
These false allegations have put his life and the personal safety of his family in danger and is a breach of his Article 2 rights.
Our client has requested that his identity is not published at this stage as he is concerned that this will increase the possibility of an attack on him and his family.
We will take all necessary steps to vindicate our client’s position in relation to any defamatory comments made against him and will not hesitate to pursue all legal remedies available in these circumstances.
